Notes
- shnid 1822 and 83397 are both incomplete in some way, and long were comments for a complete source.
83397 notes that the Betty 10 inch Middle reel of the show unplayable due to mold and water damage.
This PCM transfer also lacked the middle portion, the rest was an upgrade.
1822 had most of the middle reel, but was not equal in sound. 1822 missing middle reel was corrected and mastered
and made to fit into the sound of this Beta. This now offers the most complete source available to date.
China Rider through part of The Other One is provided by shnid 1822, the rest of the show is a new source.

One small point of pride
This will be a topic of interest review: TOPIC-Phil Lesh- POINT-Phil sings his butt off on these 1973 shows. SUBPOINT-The FIRE Aisle First off I must comment
...
that Phil's bass playing in 1973 is so cool. I am following Garcia with Weir and then Lesh sometimes all together sometimes diverging and Keith is always in the mix with Bill the drummer keeping it all flowing. How many times can you listen to the Grateful Dead sing the same songs? If I had a dollar for every time I heard that well I would have a fistful of dollars. It has taken me a while to hear the voices coming thru the music. Phil's singing in 73 is really cool. In fact it seems to me that he sings more backing vocals then Donna did during this time period. Of course in 73 you got Box of Rain almost every night and the combination of Phil and Donna always sounds so right. But also Phil is singing backing vocals on almost everything. Donna doesn't get on stage until BIODTL for this show but Phil sings from jump. How cool would it had been for some guy out in Utica working this show maybe Security not knowing the Grateful Dead from any other rock n roll outfit. Hearing Donna belt out YOU AIN'T WOMAN ENOUGH. Thinking to himself well that ain't half bad, I will have to bring the wife next time this band hits town. Back to Phil. So I am really impressed with how big a part of the Dead's harmony Phil really is especially in 1973. The Fire Aisle -----now that is hilarious. By Phil making his statement it would have had to diffuse whatever tension was percolating down from the powers that be. This show: Yeah this is another in a long line of fine recordings and stellar Grateful Dead shows. It would be challenging for me to compare these Spring Tour shows. If we just take Utica I would be hard pressed to favor either the 21st or 22nd. Both have great sound and fat set lists. Big extended freight train jams and many jams within the tunes themselves. The harmonies are great and whoever's turn it is to sing lead has the full push of youth and wind to their sails. Oh, one more about Phil if you listen to The Other One it seems to be Phil that chimes in IN A CIRCLE! You know back in the day when I had only 2-15-73 that was my extra mojo tape.-- Maybe driving through the night. "If it is all night, it has to be alright" Now I can listen to almost all of 1973 at my fingertips anytime anyplace "Wings a mile long just carried the Bird away"

Plenty of Shale in Utica
What a great show. Sure, March 1973 is full of consistently high level GD performances. But, if anything, this show is a bit of a sleeper in the sea of

pearls. If you peruse the set list and, spotting no Dark Star or Dew are thinking of moving on, think again. The Truckin->Other One->Eyes->China Doll, for example, is a fine specimen of the good ol’ GD at its finest, when anything was possible and what emerged was a fun-filled musical menagerie of varied jamming, themes, emotions and beautiful playing. And I haven’t even mentioned the outstanding sound quality and terrific first set (incl., e.g., a powerhouse Bird Song). In short, yeah, you’re gonna want to give this one a listen. It won’t disappoint.
